Kingston Parks "Movies Under the Stars"

The Princess Bride Comes to Cornell Park, August 2

princess bride

Who doesn’t like a good fairy tale?  We all know that you get happily ever after from a fairy tale, but you also get Andre the Giant, Buttercup, Rodents of Unusual Size, and lots of laughs with the Princess Bride, perfect for young, old, and the aspiring swashbuckler set.  It will be presented Friday, August 2nd at Cornell Park, generously sponsored by Stewart’s Shops and the Operating Engineers, Local 825.  Beginning at 7:30pm, the kids and kids at heart will also enjoy an interactive program of Karate and Martial Arts by Keith Bennett’s Karate Academy, teaching kids discipline and self confidence in a safe environment.  Then at 8:30pm sit back and enjoy the movie with free popcorn compliments of the 99 Restaurant and ice cold water from our friends at Binnewater.

So half of you reading this have never heard of Cornell Park, one of the hidden treasures of our community park system.  A natural amphitheater, Cornell Park hosts the Drum Boogie and the acoustics can’t be beat.  Many of you have driven by the veteran’s monument in the upper portion of the park on Wurts Street and never realized that there is a wonderful space down below.  If you come your best route is on foot or by the free trolley.  There are municipal lots on the Strand that you can park at and on street in the neighborhood, but plan on a hike if you drive because this is a largely residential neighborhood with no designated lots.  This park is also not handicapped accessible.

We’ll see YOU at the Movies!

Madagascar 3** at Forsyth Park, July 26

madagascarJoin the Madagascar pals on Friday, July 26 as they seek to get back to the New York Central Zoo with lots of laughs along the way.  Forsyth Park is the perfect backdrop for Madagascar 3**, sponsored by the Junior League of Kingston.  The Nature Center will stay open late to ensure our very own Kingston zoo friends receive some extra love and attention.  Kingston City School District students in Middle or Elementary school can participate in a “book exchange” from 7:30-8:15pm and exchange their free end of the year summer book with a new or gently used one.  The Junior League, our evening’s sponsor, will also be on hand to provide information about Kinderland II, the exciting and much needed rebuild of the Kinderland play structure located at Forsyth Park.   Popcorn generously provided by the 99 Restaurant and ice cold water from our great friends at Binnewater will be available to all guests free of charge.

If you come PLEASE park at Deitz Stadium or take the free Kingston Citibus Trolley.  Parking within the park will be restricted to protect the safety of our guests.  Grab your lawn chairs or throw blankets and come on down for an evening of fun.

** A note on programming: All films are subject to public presentation copyright licensing.  Although Kingston Parks Movies Under the Stars reserved and paid for the Lion King movie license for this evening, Disney pulled the film from public presentation licensing nationwide after our program had gone to print.  We will do our best to obtain another license next year.  Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the first two-Madagascar 3 is super fun; both grown ups and kids will share many laughs!

We’ll see YOU at the Movies!

Casablanca on Wall Street Saturday Night

casablancaKingston Parks Movies Under the Stars is back again this Saturday Night to present a classic for the grown ups; the 1942 drama Casablanca sponsored by our friends at Basch and Keegan.  Kids will enjoy the Children’s Day Parade on Friday night, and parents can enjoy a night just for them on Saturday night, July 13th.

We will be setting up at the intersection of Wall and North Front Streets where the Farmer’s Market was located in previous years.  The street will become a pedestrian walkway by around 6:00pm (no parking and no driving) and the movie will begin at sunset – around 8:30pm.  Bring a chair or blanket to get comfy for the movie.  Wall Street was recently selected as one of the “10 Great Streets in America” by the American Planning Association and you will love the charm and beauty of this wonderful movie backdrop.    Parking will be available at municipal lots on North Front Street, the County Building, Deitz Stadium, and on-street.  The Citibus Trolley will also be running a loop throughout the City both before and after the film.  Come early and pick up some movie treats at the Kingston Candy Bar, Boitson’s Restaurant or Dominick’s Cafe (all generous sponsors of the Movies project) or stay late for drinks at one of the many night spots in Uptown Kingston.

We’ll see YOU at the Movies!

The Sandlot Comes to Barman Park, July 5

the sandlotWell movie fans our first two movies have been cancelled, but we are back to try again.  Last Friday’s Harry Potter was certainly less than magical…  Each cancelled film will be rescheduled for the end of the season.  A collective fingers and toes crossing for decent weather is in order.  We do our best to post weather related cancellations by 5:00pm.

Join us this Friday at Barman Park/Knothole League Field for a presentation of the Sandlot.  The Knothole League has lots of fun surprises and games for the kids and the Kingston Candy Bar, the emporium of deliciousness, will be making Smore’s to go along with the movie theme.  Sponsored by Binnewater, you can expect plenty of delightful cool refreshing water and the 99 Restaurant is once again providing yummy popcorn.

So just where is this park?? The Knothole League Field is located at the intersection of Clinton and Greenkill Avenues, across from the Boys and Girls Club.  Parking is available on-street and the Citibus Trolley will also be running.

If the weather looks frightful, the movie and location will be rescheduled to a back up rain date at the end of the season.  Check the website for details on movie night.  We will always post weather cancellations by 5:00pm each movie night.
